Some Great Young Learners Online Teaching

 

An International school in Phnom Penh published these photos on their Facebook page. This is actually a great teaching online for young students.

We can see a lesson displayed on the screen, they are using zoom which is great.

We can also see that they are also using the real objects corresponding to the lesson which is, one more time, great! These kids are kindergarteners and the object have obviously been prepared by adults.

They are sitting quietly in front of their computers… Which is also a sign of the presence of an active adult with them, and of sufficient wealth to have a computer and a Wi-Fi connection…

Nevertheless, we can also guess that it is not as easy as it looks in reality!

If we think about our students, whatever level they may be in, this kind of “perfection” is nearly impossible to achieve because of the lack of computer, Wi-Fi, and of a competent adult to guide the students.

Tests Analysis

These tests have been taken by our year 1 and year 2 students on August 6/7 and 10/11. 2020. There content is based on what has been taught online since we closed the schools on March 16^th. 

Year 1:

Year 1 : 50% Pass / 50% Fail

Year 2:

Year 2 : 62.5% Pass / 37.5% Fail

Saint François Technical High School conducted some tests with all the students. Class by class, for 2 days, they came in our premises to be tested on everything that has been taught online since march 16^th, which is the day all schools closed in Cambodia because of the Covid19 pandemic.

The main point of these tests was to let us know exactly what our students had really learnt during the incredible Covid19 period! 

 

The results are not very encouraging: only 50% passed in year one and 62.5% in year two.

What to thinks of that?

The problem comes from both students and teachers.

Like everybody else in the world, we were not prepared to this completely new situation of closed schools and online teaching from March 16^th. The result is that we did what we could, our best certainly but still… not enough!

No matter how much efforts the teachers put in their teaching, a lot or far less, the results of the students are more or less the same.

The question should be: How do we get ready for the next pandemic?
